In November 2006 HP introduced across North America (NA) and in Europe (EU) the Color LaserJet CP4005 printer. Based on the earlier HP Color LaserJet 4700 print engine, the CP4005 featured OEM rated print speeds of 30 pages per minute (ppm) for monochrome and 25 ppm for color, with a duty cycle of 80,000 pages per month.

All models ship with full-capacity 7,500page yield black, cyan, magenta, and yellow cartridges rather than lower-yielding "starter" units. Replacement cartridges are offered only in the 7,500K page yield. Most of the cartridge components are interchangeable with those in the HP Color LaserJet 4700 cartridges. Only the chip and toner fill weights differ. All cartridges require chips for the printers to function correctly.
